Over the past week, I’ve never felt more European. More appreciative of all my friends from Europe and the rest of the world that chose to make their home in the UK, despite this country’s quirks and flaws.
I’ve never felt so scared of the brokenness of our political system. The undercurrent of intolerance.
No one was paying attention. I wasn’t paying attention. It’s only really just registered that Nigel Farage and other UKIP horrors are so very present in European parliament, supposed to be representing the UK with all the other neighbouring countries. This is not something that has just gone on for a couple of years. It’s been DECADES. Taking salary from the EU for representing the UK in the EU.
Well, you got our attention now. Yep.
You misled and lied to the people of the UK. You hijacked and redirected people’s discontent, distrust of elites, shaping it to fit your far right agenda. Good splattering of nostalgia, and big dose of racism. UKIP, Tories, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.
So…you activised people of the UK, to support your marches, websites, stickers, posters.
Got some media here you can use any way you wish. Free. Only thing I would ask is send me a photo, drop me a line, if you used it, so I can scrap book and get a little lovely shivery feeling that I contributed something.
I want to do good in the world. And I support you doing good in the world.
I love EU. And You.

I was having difficulty using VPN to work from home. Most internet traffic was fine (skype, email, etc) but names were not being resolved so I couldn’t browse the web or view pages on the intranet.
I found a solution! On the SuperHub configuration pages, (192.168.0.1), go to advanced settings, then firewall, then select PPTP Pass-Through
Then connect with vpn, and names should resolve.
- Do you dislike Google or Bing serving so many adverts to you every time you search?
- Do you feel uncomfortable with the amount of information gathered about you with your searches, and don’t want a search engine to build a profile on you and store your history and ip addresses (privacy concerns and search engines)?
- Do you hate having your search results manipulated, and reinforcing your existing world view (Filter bubble) and making it hard to get new information?
If the answer is yes to all or some of these questions, perhaps it is time you changed your search engine!
You should use duckduckgo. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=duck+duck+go&ia=about
With plenty of easy features to get the results you want. You can save your settings anonymously in the cloud, and integrate into your favourite search engine (mine’s Chrome, and I google services all the time, so they’re still watching…)
Configuring Your Browser
To make the omnibox work with duckduckgo, do the following
- Open your settings
- under “search” heading, click button that says “manage search engines”
- Scroll down the enormous list of “other search engines”. I imagine duckduckgo is not already on there, so you’ll have to add it.
- At the bottom, in the three input boxes put “duckduckgo.com”, “duckduckgo.com”, “http://duckduckgo.com?q=%s” and click done.
- You might have to find it in the list, (open search manager again). Hover over the entry so that a “make default” button will show, and click on it.
Voila, you should be able to anonymously search for stuff you want to search for!
I’m setting up hosting on a new provider, and it is all cloudy and lovely.
As part of the process, they wanted me to provide an ssh key to use for making connections to the terminal (ubuntu flavour). I am on a windows machine, so I needed to use a tool to generate, puttygen. Those familiar with ssh from windows will be familiar with putty, it’s a very handy utility. Thank you Simon Tatham!
If you’re on a linux based pc or a mac you have some ssh key generation built in, you lucky people.
To use puttygen, simply open and click “generate private and public pair” button, and then you will be asked to move your pointer around the screen to generate some random noise for the algorithm. After it is done, save both the private (*.ppk) and public key (*.txt) for safe keeping. Then you can copy and paste the key to the configuration page for your host.
Just had a day of falling down a rabbit hole. Though not arrived in anything as delightful as Wonderland for my trouble. I just keep seeming to keep falling… and at the same time I am falling out of love with Windows, seriously. Fine as a user, but as a developer…oh sh… (more…)

In an 1951 article for the New York Times, ‘The Best Argument for Fanaticism – Liberalism’, Bertrand Russell lays out what he sees as the supplementary Decalogue for teachers. Can it be used by parents too?

There’s nothing like having a homeless person camp out in their car on your street during the winter to find out about strength of your community.
