Anti-filter bubble

Hey! Kids!

  • Do you dislike Google or Bing serving so many adverts to you every time you search?
  • Do you feel uncomfortable with the amount of information gathered about you with your searches, and don’t want a search engine to build a profile on you and store your history and ip addresses (privacy concerns and search engines)?
  • Do you hate having your search results manipulated, and reinforcing your existing world view (Filter bubble) and making it hard to get new information?

If the answer is yes to all or some of these questions, perhaps it is time you changed your search engine!

You should use duckduckgo. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=duck+duck+go&ia=about

With plenty of easy features to get the results you want. You can save your settings anonymously in the cloud, and integrate into your favourite search engine (mine’s Chrome, and I google services all the time, so they’re still watching…)

Configuring Your Browser

Google Chrome

To make the omnibox work with duckduckgo, do the following

  1. Open your settings
  2. under “search” heading, click button that says “manage search engines”
  3. Scroll down the enormous list of “other search engines”. I imagine duckduckgo is not already on there, so you’ll have to add it.
  4. At the bottom, in the three input boxes put “duckduckgo.com”, “duckduckgo.com”, “http://duckduckgo.com?q=%s” and click done.
  5. You might have to find it in the list, (open search manager again). Hover over the entry so that a “make default” button will show, and click on it.

Voila, you should be able to anonymously search for stuff you want to search for!

Intelligent Chicken Coop: Features

What features do I want? Right now I think I need the following.

Chicken Door

To allow for the door to open and close automatically, I thought of the simplest solution…no microprocessors or automation at all.

I toyed with the idea of chickens using a chicken flap. Like a cat flap, but for chickens.

Sh*tty Eggs

I love my chickens, but I don’t love them so much that I am out at sunrise and sunset opening and closing their coop.

Headless Pi – Update

I’ve tried to replicate the setup on a new Pi B+ for accessing through vnc, and I ran into authentication problems.

The access was through the default user, pi, account. After a frustrating day of fresh build of the os and then install of tightvnc and all that gubbins, I was locked out from logging in directly.

Conflicted…

I am volunteering as programming/ICT support in both primary and secondary schools in Cambridge. I had an idea that I would most certainly, definitely go in to primary teaching as I adore little kids. and their unjaded enthusiasm.

I did not want to be in secondary school, perhaps because my own experience was pretty horrible.

However, I may have changed my mind. I continue to waver between preferring one age group and another, am considering a “third way”. Perhaps I don’t need to decide. Perhaps I can get my QTS for secondary school and work on consulting for primary too, or create afterschool clubs for both.

Mister Bubbles Arrives

I let things lapse again. That last post seemed so immense, that it was so hard to shift it off of the top if the page by another post.

So…we had a baby. Then just over two years later, we had another one. Another boy. I am a mother of two sons.
